Resinous and hardwearing with it's, waterproof and durable qualities, Scottish Larch is one of the toughest soft woods available, making it an ideal timber for decking. Larch is aesthetically pleasing with it's warm mix of colours from pale to golden brown to terracotta streaked, which fades to a striking silver/grey after prolonged exposure to sunlight and moisture. Paints, stains and UV protections are available that can prolong this if the newly laid colour is desired - though this will require regular upkeep, whereas untreated Larch is extremely low maintenance and requires no regular maintaining other than scrub/power washing to prevent algae build up. Larch decking has a life expectancy of at least 30-60 years, this can be prolonged by using Scottish Oak for posts or limiting ground contact. New grooved decking option. Finished decking boards, planed all round with chamfered top corners. @£32.80/m2 plus vat 25 x 90 x 3600mm = only £10.70 per board! 25 x 140 x 3600mm = only £16.40 per board! Cut to order when stock available. For more information contact our Sawmill directly at enquiries.scottishwood@gmail.com Standard decking options. Stunning work by our talented customer Donald Fairgray from Scottish wood supplied naturally durable Larch. Larch is a versatile timber that works well in exterior structures, cladding and decking as it's resin content naturally protects it from decay. Whilst larch is a softwood, it is renowned for it's hard wearing and durability. It is an aesthetically pleasing timber that ages well. If you would like more information for an upcoming project then have a look at what's available for cut to order www.scottishwood.co.uk/what-s-in-stock or contact our Sawmill directly at enquiries.scottishwood@gmail.com #scottishwood #sawmill #scottishtimber #naturallydurable #ScottishLarch #scottishoak #timberforframes #timberbuilds #sustainablebuildings #sustainabkebuilds #locallysourced #milledonsite #scottishworkingwoods #qualitytimber #tradingarmofdynamicwoods #scottishworkingwoods

A couple of weeks ago Scottish Wood hosted the first ever Working Woods Scotland course! The course was run by the ‘Association of Scottish Hardwood Sawmillers’ and was designed to bring together workers from across the Scottish hardwood industry (from woodland managers and foresters to sawmillers and furniture makers – with many variations in between!). Over the course of 3 days our trainees were put through their paces as they were taught about good silvicultural practices, how to grade logs and standing timber, how to process and dry hardwood timber, timber pricing and end use markets of processed hardwood. The course was a great success, thanks to amazing organisation by Nick Marshal, and the help of Kelly Morss who offered her years of experience running Woodland Heritages ‘From Woodland to Workshop’ course to help us fine tune our delivery of WWS, and of course not to mention the amazing trainers: Gavin Munro, Rick Warrell and Jim Birley, and guest presenters Neil Aitchison and Paul Hodgkiss. Thanks also to Scottish Forestry and Scottish Forestry Trust who helped fund the course. We’re hoping to run another course next year, if anyone is interested, please contact Catriona.scottishwood@gmail.com for more information.

Sycamore is a beautiful, pale white creamy wood, the sap and heartwood are generally the same colour with some darker streaks often found and the marked growth rings a rich reddy-brown. Its grain is broad, strong and vibrant - really lustrous patterns can be found. Sometimes the log can be affected by a fungus that colours the wood resulting in it spalting in a very striking way which always adds amazing character to a board. Sycamore is perfect for use with food, kitchen worktops, bar tops, chopping boards, turning for platters and serving dishes, plates and bowls or even rolling pins as it doesn’t taint or leach tannin. Due to its workability, moderate hardness, weight, and strength, its uses are nearly unlimited. Popular for cabinets, veneer, kitchenware, musical instruments, small speciality wood items, boxes the list goes on. It cuts and planes well with hand or machine tools. Sycamore has very low stiffness, making it ideal for steam bending; it has medium bending and crushing strength. Sycamore turns, glues, takes stains and finishes well, an overall great wood to work with. Sycamore is available from our Sawmill, Timber-shop onsite and online store!

Unfortunately due to unprecedented demand over the last year and a half, coupled with staff furlough and covid19 impacting on our ability to cut/stock and season Firewood as well as maintain our Timber stock levels for our Sawmill and Timber-shop we have taken the difficult decision to take a year out from supplying/delivering Firewood due to exhausted stock levels. We will be concentrating on our Timber stocks and kiln drying of boards at present. While working on building stocks back up, we are looking into new kilning/machining and more efficient splitting services to keep up with demand and are hopeful to be able to supply again next year.

Did you know we only supply timber that has been sourced locally from sustainable sources in Scotland? Usually with a 50 mile radius of where we are based in Fife. Timber is a renewable and recyclable resource which unfortunately had been greatly underused and wasted much due to imported timber. The hardwood industry is left mainly to a few large continental or English firms who send their salesmen to scour the land searching for the very best trees to export and process outside Scotland. Some of these products are then re-imported as prime grade timber or veneers. The rest of our timber is deemed "waste" or valueless, trees that have graced our land for hundreds of years are even dumped in landfill sites. At Scottish Wood we only supply quality locally sourced sustainable timber that has been harvested responsibly from well managed forests that are continuously replenished or logs felled due to damage, disease, wind etc) ensuring the stability of our local woodlands and wood supply. By buying local, sustainably produced wood you also get all of the benefits of naturally beautiful, solid wood while knowing that you're giving something back. Scottish Wood are members of ASHS an independent cooperative of small companies, supplying Scottish grown hardwood timber, premium softwoods and timber products to the U.K marketplace. ASHS was formed to facilitate the promotion of Scottish hardwood to the Scottish market. All our Timber comes with the Scottish Working Woods guarantee that Timber supplied has been locally and sustainably sourced. #scottishwood #sawmill #sustainablysourcedinscotland #sustainablysourced #qualityscottishhardwoods #ashs #associationofscottishhardwoodsawmill #scottishworkingwoods #growninscotland #woodworking #hardwood #hardwoodsawmill

So... who are we and what makes our Timber just that little bit more special? Scottish Wood is hardwood Sawmill based in Inzievar woods, Fife Scotland. Established in 2000 it was an innovative project born from extensive and ongoing research into the woodland culture in Scotland. We are a not for profit organisation and the trading arm of Dynamic Woods, a Scottish Charity that brings together local communities, environmentalists, land owners and local businesses to promote the sustainable development of our woodland resources. Funds raised through the sale of our timber goes directly to supporting these projects. It's aim is to regenerate a thriving woodland culture, maximising the potential from our existing broadleaf woodlands. This in turn will secure the future of our woodlands; it will help to improve our local environment, boost our local economy and create genuine local employment and training opportunities. Timber is a renewable and recyclable resource which unfortunately had been greatly underused and wasted much due to imported timber. Stunning boards coming of the saw! Milled for stock these boards will be stacked with stickers to allow air flow and prevent sagging or warping and then air dried - 1 year of drying per inch of board thickness. Once air dried for a sufficient amount of time they will then be added to our kiln to dry evenly between 8-11% moisture content. Boards are then added to our rough sawn stores. Boards selected for our Timber shop will be planed to thickness.
