Great visit this week from Starsky & Hutch the 21st century environment explorers!
Martin hutchinson and his dog are world environment explorers and campaigners, currently travelling the UK, raising awareness, sharing knowledge and visiting all kinds of organisations, communities and individuals putting environmental issues on the agenda. More info on Starsky and Hutch's environment exploration mission can be found here - www.facebook.com/Starsky-Hutch-the-21st-century-environment-explorers-101893331544803
What a privilege to meet Martin and show how Scottish Wood is run as environmentally friendly as possible with all our timber coming from responsible, sustainable sources in Scotland and the utilisation of wind felled timber that was once deemed as waste wood or left to rot can be reclaimed and the beautiful timbers used for a variety of purposes.
More info on Scottish Wood Philosophy 👉
Scottish Wood is an innovative project born from extensive and ongoing research into the woodland culture in Scotland.
We are a not for profit organisation and the trading arm of Dynamic Woods, a Scottish Charity that brings together local communities, environmentalists, land owners and local businesses to promote the sustainable development of our woodland resources and to regenerate a thriving woodland culture, maximising the potential from our existing broadleaf woodlands. This in turn will secure the future of our woodlands; it will help to improve our local environment, boost our local economy and create genuine local employment and training opportunities.
Timber is a renewable and recyclable resource which unfortunately had been greatly underused and wasted much due to imported timber. The hardwood industry had been left mainly to a few large continental or English firms who scour the land searching for the very best of our trees to export and process outside Scotland. Some of these products are then re-imported as prime grade timber or veneers. The rest of our timber deemed "waste" or valueless, trees that have graced our land for hundreds of years are even dumped in landfill sites. At Scottish Wood we only stock timber sourced locally, keeping road miles low, our timber is from sustainable, well managed woodlands including wind blown and urban timber to supply you with quality Scottish hardwoods, displaying the beautiful, full of rich colour and character of the trees grown in Scotland, from simple straight grained timber to cats paw markings, spalting, flamed and burrs. All Scottish timber is wonderfully unique and available to you right here from Scotland.
Scottish wood has developed an ambitious programme called "Leave a better world" - its overall aim is to ensure that we leave a positive impact on society and the natural environment, and to guide Scottish Wood into becoming a carbon negative business. It is doing this through a combination of: (1) powering down on high carbon energy uses, while scaling up on renewables; (2) undergoing reforesting and biodiversity efforts both in the surrounding woodlands and beyond; (3) funding and supporting a range of local and country wide social and environmental projects.
